Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces an entire tooth. It is anchored in the jaw bone and serves as a base for a replacement crown, bridge or denture. Implants can be used to replace one, several or even all teeth. Several months after placement, the implant becomes integrated with the jawbone and feels completely natural. Patients seeking implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant.

Preparation involves a comprehensive consultation and x-rays, extraction of teeth that are to be replaced (if necessary), and curing any possible gum disease.

Implant placement:

the implant is surgically inserted into the bone below gumline. The gum flap is then sutured over it and the tissue is left to heal. Stitches are normally removed after one or two weeks. The procedure is routinely carried out with local anesthesia and takes approx. 30 minutes. The implant is then monitored for 2-6 months during which a tight connection is established between the bone and implant. Sometimes a temporary crown is attached simultaneously with implant placement.

Fitting a crown or bridge:

a small surgical procedure uncovers the gum over the top of the implant and an abutment is screwed onto the implant body. 48 hours later once the gum around the implant has healed, the dentist can take impressions for a dental lab to manufacture a crown or bridge. It takes 5-10 days to make the crown or bridge.

Bone augmentation:

in some cases it is necessary to enhance the volume or quality of the jaw bone before inserting an implant. This can often be managed in one visit. If not, a 2-4 months are required before an implant can be inserted.
